Curler and Photographer Kryštof Žďárský created a Map of the Curling World. Where is curling played? How many curlers does each country have? And how many medals? The map contains all of this information.
How did he get into it?
In the course Thematic Cartography, we were assigned a seminar project in which we had to create a map file in A1 format. We were advised to choose a topic we enjoy, so I chose curling. Collecting the data and processing it afterwards took me about 80–90 hours over three months.
The data I used is listed in the map, but among other things it included the current team rankings from the WCF website. For the number of players, I got help from Jiří Snítil, who gave me a contact at the WCF with access to general tables. Overall, the most time‑consuming part was preparing and processing the input data – tables and shapefiles for the individual maps. The actual creation of the map was then easier.
