He Would Like to Photograph and Play at the Olympics One Day – Kryštof Žďárský

He photographs national championships and international tournaments in Prague, but his Instagram is mostly filled with images of cities and nature. Curlers from all over Europe share Kryštof Žďárský’s photos on social media. What does he enjoy about it, and how did he even get into photography? He answered in an interview.

How did you get into photography?
I started during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I didn’t know what to do at home. A friend was into photography, so I borrowed his camera, tried it out, and enjoyed it so much that I bought my first one – a basic Canon 2000D.

Is it something you study, or are you self‑taught?
I taught myself photography, mainly through YouTube videos, from friends, and by trial & error.

What do you study?
I study Geography and Cartography at the Faculty of Science at Charles University. The field isn’t strictly photographic, but we work with drone data to create photogrammetric projections, so I’ve ended up closer to photography through school than I originally expected. In the future, I’d like to focus specifically on drones and working with their data.

What do you enjoy photographing?
I most enjoy photographing travel, landscapes, architecture, and nature.

What do you enjoy photographing in curling?
In curling, I’m most fascinated by the dynamics of the game. I try to capture movement while also taking advantage of the fact that I see the game from a different angle than as a player on the ice.

What would you like to photograph in the future? Do you have a dream?
I’d like to improve at portrait photography and get into photographing more sports. My dream is to one day be able to make a living from photography. And as a player, I’d love to reach the Olympics.

Would you be interested in photographing for the WCF or at the Olympics?
Photographing for the WCF or at the Olympics would definitely appeal to me. I even considered applying to their program some time ago, but back then I didn’t have enough time. If the same opportunity came up today, I would definitely apply.
